Whilst here in Europe it is a major struggle to book rental cars with any kind of adaptation, be they hand controls, accessible vehicle etc., in the USA, it is a totally different picture. The only question you are likely to be asked at most rental car stations there is 'which side do you want the hand controls?' How many more disabled travellers would be making journeys in Europe if we made such equipment more readily available here? Lots!

And moving things ahead even further across the 'pond', Avis Rent A Car System, LLC has announced a new pilot program that will give customers the ability to rent a mobility scooter and have it waiting in the trunk of their next rental vehicle or delivered to the customer’s location. Mobility scooters are four-wheeled, lightweight, battery-operated transportable units that are well suited for travelers up to 250lbs. The program rolls out at two of the nation’s most frequented leisure and convention destinations – Las Vegas and Orlando. Avis is the first rental car company to offer mobility scooters combined with vehicle rentals.

Let's hope others will follow. And come on Europe - WAKE UP!
